Welcome to the Outdoor Classroom! Here our purpose is to teach science and natural history education through dynamic experiences in the field that stimulate curiosity, critical thinking and discovery for children, adults and families - all resulting in an enhancement to scientific literacy in our community. The Outdoor Classroom is Louisville’s newest outdoor STEAM center (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), an educational experience utilizing natural history, arts education, and exploration to teach science. We envision a future in which all people view themselves as life-long learners, and share a connection to and appreciation for the natural world, their community and each other.
The Parklands offers day camps during Spring Break and Winter Break, as well as week-long summer camps for children in grades K through 6. Get Outside! Camps at The Parklands offer exciting, enriching, discovery-based field experiences that allow children to touch, see and learn about the world around them. Children will participate in hands-on science investigations in the natural setting of Beckley Creek Park and through the use of state-of-the-art classrooms at the PNC Achievement Center for Education and Interpretation.
All programs offer a balanced day of in-classroom learning and outdoor field experiences. Camp hours are 9:00 AM-4:00 PM with drop-off from 8:30-9:00 AM and pick-up from 4:00-5:00 PM. Campers must provide their own sack lunch, a snack, and a bottle for water each day.
Parklands Members receive a discounted camp price and becoming a member is easy! To learn more about supporting The Parklands through membership (and immediately becoming eligible for discounts) click here.
Do you love to explore? Join us for our Winter Break adventure day camps that will bring out the nature explorer in each of you. Camp will run December 26-28, 2018 and January 2-4, 2019. Each day we will hike a different trail as we “get out and play” in the winter Parklands landscape. Learn your way around The Parklands with our knowledgeable interpretive staff, as we guide you into some of the “special places” within The Parklands. We will investigate how plants and animals in The Parklands adapt to the winter climate while exploring our trails in this new season. Wear your hiking boots & dress for the weather! This camp is based on skill level and generally for children 4th-6th grade. We will be covering 4-5 miles per day. If you feel your child is less experienced and will not want to cover more mileage please consider the K-3rd class.
