Welcome to the Outdoor Classroom! Here our purpose is to teach science and natural history education through dynamic experiences in the field that stimulate curiosity, critical thinking and discovery for children, adults and families - all resulting in an enhancement to scientific literacy in our community. The Outdoor Classroom is Louisville’s newest outdoor STEAM center (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), an educational experience utilizing natural history, arts education, and exploration to teach science. We envision a future in which all people view themselves as life-long learners, and share a connection to and appreciation for the natural world, their community and each other.
The Parklands offers day camps during Spring Break and Winter Break, as well as week-long summer camps for children in grades K through 6. Get Outside! Camps at The Parklands offer exciting, enriching, discovery-based field experiences that allow children to touch, see and learn about the world around them. Children will participate in hands-on science investigations in the natural setting of Beckley Creek Park and through the use of state-of-the-art classrooms at the PNC Achievement Center for Education and Interpretation.
All programs offer a balanced day of in-classroom learning and outdoor field experiences. Camp hours are 9:00 AM-4:00 PM with drop-off from 8:30-9:00 AM and pick-up from 4:00-5:00 PM. Campers must provide their own sack lunch, a snack, and a bottle for water each day.
Parklands Members receive a discounted camp price and becoming a member is easy! To learn more about supporting The Parklands through membership (and immediately becoming eligible for discounts) click here.
Spring Break Hiking Day Camp
Lace up your hiking boots and grab your backpack for a week of fun and adventure at The Parklands Spring Break Hiking Day Camp! From April 1-5, 2019, campers will explore a new trail in Beckley Creek Park each day while investigating the flora and fauna that call the park home. Eagles, deer, raccoons, and fish are just some of the wildlife we hope to encounter while exploring the park. Campers will build forts, play games, conduct science experiments, and explore the world around them. This week promises to be full of adventure as we romp and tromp all over the Beckley Creek map! Beginner Hiking Day Camp is recommended for students grades K-3rd. However, if you feel your child can hike farther distances, exceptions can be made to enroll in the experienced section. Beginner hikers can expect to hike 2-3 miles per day. Experienced Hiking Day Camp is recommended for students grades 4th-6th. However, if you feel your child would rather hike shorter distances, the Beginner Hiking group may be more suitable.
Spring Break Camp Pricing: 45/day for Members or $50/day for non-members. Save $15 if you sign up for all five days. Enter the code “HIKE”.
