Louisville, Ky. (August 13, 2020) — The Parklands of Floyds Fork is hosting non-traditional instruction for students in grades 1-6 beginning August 25, 2020. At the Forest Learning Lab, non-traditional instruction meets the non-traditional Outdoor Classroom of Beckley Creek Park with its forests, meadows, and aquatic habitats. Led by Parklands Interpretive Rangers—all of whom are trained educators and scientists—the Forest Learning Lab offers students a structured day of non-traditional instruction, homework help, and outdoor exploration time. Classes will be held almost entirely outdoors to provide a safe, engaging environment for your child to thrive during NTI.
“During this challenging time children need a safe, engaging environment in which to learn, socialize, and grow,” said Director of Education Curtis Carman. “At the Forest Learning Lab, we aim to provide those things by utilizing our outstanding education team and the natural landscape of Beckley Creek Park. With the help of Wi-Fi hot spots, students can access their NTI curriculum from anywhere in the park—be it on the trail, at the creek, or sitting at one of our pavilions. This pandemic has brought new meaning to the phrase ‘outdoor education’ and students will get just that at the Forest Learning Lab.”
Forest Learning Lab sessions will be offered weekly for kids in grades 1-3 and 4-6 from August 25 through October 16. To make NTI as flexible as possible, parents can enroll kids in a full week or select single days that best fit their schedule. To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, extra safety procedures will be in place and group size is extremely limited.

The Forest Learning Lab is the latest program developed by The Parklands education team to help families and educators deliver non-traditional instruction to students during the pandemic. In April, The Parklands launched The Parklands Virtual Classroom—a free, online hub of fun and engaging videos and worksheets that students can watch and complete from the safety of their own homes.
Curriculum in the virtual classroom encourages participants to explore outside, whether that be in the backyard, a neighborhood park or on a trip to The Parklands. The Virtual Classroom also houses videos of recurring programs, such as Wednesday Wonders, a weekly interactive program designed to spark the curiosity of young children. Typically hosted in-person, each week, participants explore a new science wonder with a story, craft, hike or related science experiment.
Resources in The Parklands Virtual Classroom are free and available for parents, teachers and individuals of all ages at www.theparklands.org/classroom.
