Outdoor Classroom Health and Wellness Initiatives—
(April 7, 2014) Louisville, Ky. —21st Century Parks, operator of The Parklands of Floyds Fork, Louisville’s newest public park system, is excited to announce a new health and wellness partnership with Norton Healthcare.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Norton as our exclusive healthcare partner in 2014,” said Dan Jones, 21st Century Parks Chairman and CEO, “Norton brings knowledge, expertise and resources to the table to help us achieve our mutual goal to positively impact health and wellness in the Louisville area.”
The partnership is three-tiered and expands upon an established relationship involving Bike to Beat Cancer. The new sponsorship begins with The Parklands “Get Outside and Play Series”, offering monthly hike, bike, and paddling events that not only incorporate guided interpretation of the landscape and natural history, but now include fitness and wellness initiatives and information. These family-focused events include activities for all ages. Most events are offered free of cost, with specialized interpretive events requiring a $5.00 fee for participants who are not Parklands Members. Norton will also sponsor The Parklands Spring Fling on May 10th, a family-friendly event that showcases all there is to see and do in Beckley Creek Park. Thanks to Norton’s partnership, the event will now include a Wellness Fair and children’s activities including a 1k Fun Run. More information regarding this event will be shared in the coming weeks.
Additionally, Norton is helping to increase health education for local youth through The Parklands’ Outdoor Classroom. Healthy activities as well as fitness and nutrition information will become a part of the curriculum for the over 5,000 students kindergarten to 12th grade who attend field trips and other educational programs at The Parklands.
“Norton Healthcare is excited to partner with The Parklands to develop this expanded service and resource for the community,” said Lynnie Meyer, Chief Development Officer, Norton Healthcare. “We have really stepped up our efforts to help our 12,000 employees make healthy choices and place an emphasis on fitness and preventive care. We are perfectly aligned with the upcoming events and the long term benefits the park offers.”
The partnership officially kicks off with an April 12th Family Fit Program involving paddling and fishing on Floyds Fork in Beckley Creek Park. This event is free and open to the public but registration is necessary.
