Local Brewery Honors the Past, Present and Future at The Parklands

October 12, 2017. Ben Shinkle and Greg Hayden of 3rd Turn Brewery, along with Brian Minrath and Dale Shinkle.

Visiting The Parklands of Floyds Fork and seeing people enjoying the beautiful space takes us back to when we were kids and time spent on HI Bank Farm. A working dairy farm where several generations of our family, the Oesterritters, both worked and played hard is now part of Beckley Creek Park. Generations to come will walk barefoot on the Egg Lawn, gather at the Gheens Foundation Lodge, and discover the wonders of the natural world at the PNC Achievement Center for Education & Interpretation.

The combination of a traditional German upbringing and a farm work ethic was the seed that started the idea of opening a brewery. Years of home brewing and hard work led to 3rd Turn Brewing becoming a reality. When looking for locations we always thought bringing a brewery, back to the east end of Jefferson County would be amazing. Just a few years later, we have found a home in Jeffersontown, KY. Being so close to the farm where our journey started is definitely bittersweet.

To honor the past we created HI Bank Brown, a beer that shares its name with our family farm through which Floyds Fork creek flowed and supplied water for the area. Packed with noble hops and nice earthy tones, Hi Bank is a brown ale that is finished with vanilla for a smooth taste that is perfect after a long hard day at work.

To celebrate the present and the future we brewed the Community Garden IPA. Community Garden IPA is made with Azacca hops. Azacca is the Haitian God of agriculture. This beer honors community gardens around the area, especially the community gardens in Beckley Creek Park.

We are happy to host a Member Mingle to help celebrate the success of the first Fall Membership Drive to support The Parklands Fund on Thursday, November 2 at 3rd Turn Brewery (10408 Watterson Trail, Louisville, KY 40299). The fun starts at 6 PM and all in attendance will have the chance to purchase our HI Bank Brown or Community Garden IPA, along with a variety of other beers on tap. All Parklands Members and their friends interested in becoming Members are invited to come enjoy each other's company, light snacks, brewery tours and the musical stylings of Britton Patrick Morgan. Cross your fingers for nice weather, we have a lovely patio and deck - the perfect place to chat with other Members!
