Trails of Turkey Run & Why You Need to Plan a Hike Now

Whether you’re looking to challenge yourself, or simply want to observe the descending autumn leaves, Turkey Run has what you’re seeking on your next hike. Venture through Paw Paw Trail if you want an easy, winding path, hike through Chinkapin Trail for a challenge, or make your way down the Louisville Loop if you want to steer clear of unpaved ground. If you can’t choose between those—try all three!

 Paw Paw Trail

Paw Paw Trail is nothing short of picturesque. Granted that I  embarked on this hike at daybreak on a crisp autumn morning, the walk was truly an indulgence to the eye. This particular trail has  several twists and turns, but not to an overly challenging degree. Paw Paw also features some minor hills and spots where large rocks paved the ground. I saw several people biking this trail, so be prepared to share the trail. Overall, I would suggest this trail for the beginner hiker, a family, or someone simply looking for a walk with unforgettable views.

Chinkapin Trail

Although I did not complete the entirety of this trail, the mile of terrain that I did cover proved of its qualified attributes. Chinkapin is Paw Paw’s more difficult neighbor trail, but a neighbor with equally vivid views. There were sections of Chinkapin that caught my breath due to its many hills that climb higher than Paw Paw’s. This trail requires a bit more confidence in footing, and with that, I suggest some hiking boots—or at least a sturdy pair of tennis shoes. Chinkapin is slightly more enraptured in foliage than the other paths I chose, so this walk is perfect for seeing the trees in this shifting season period. I recommend Chinkapin for the more advanced hiker—someone looking to get a good workout, or the ambitious photographer.

Paved Path & Louisville Loop

The end of Paw Paw Trail dives straight into a paved path called Bullfrog Crossing that connects to the Louisville Loop. This path leads you right past Boulder Pond and on a short scenic stroll among various species of plants. The Loop is a versatile approach to getting your nature fix. You don’t have to get your shoes dirty, but you still get the same hills, curves, and landscape that you would get on the natural surface trails. Some of the hills are steep and can be a challenge, so I suggest carrying a water bottle. And don’t think for a second that you’re missing out on the chances of seeing wildlife simply because you’re on a paved trail; a pair of deer crossed within feet in front of me. All in all, the Louisville Loop in Turkey Run is ideal for anyone in search of a walk surrounded by falling foliage, but I do warn that it is not a flat path.

Something for Everyone

There is undoubtedly a path for everyone in Turkey Run. All of these trails are biking trails as well as hiking trails, so if you’re looking for a hike-only trail, try Wild Hyacinth or Boone Bottoms Trails. Put down the cell phone, take a break from the artificial heating and cooling of the indoors, and go enjoy the unparalleled environment of fall. Trees are shedding their leaves and decorating the ground, deer are roaming, and the autumn hues are absolutely stunning. Take a walk in Turkey Run before fall fades away.
