This is the time of the year when people begin thinking about New Year’s Resolutions.  I’ve noticed an increase in TV advertisements for weight loss clinics, supplements, and gym memberships.   I’m not going to lie, I’ve considered all of them.  Being healthy and losing weight always tops my list.

Luckily, I know an amazing place where I can spend quality time with my family, get various types of exercise, and clear my mind of all the stress.  And the best part is that it doesn’t cost much more than a few bottles of water and granola bars.

There are so many things you can do at The Parklands to get healthy and fit all year long. The best part is that you’ll have so much fun it won’t feel like work at all. Check out these calorie burning exercises you can try at The Parklands:

The above calorie counts came from a fitness app called "Lose it". Also, there is a website http://www.acaloriecalculator that gives the calorie count for about every activity you can think of (including playing at the playground, skateboarding, playing catch and other things you can do in The Parklands!)

Story by Suzy Stoffel. Suzy is an Interpretive Ranger at The Parklands and a teacher at Crosby Middle School. She enjoys helping children and families increase their scientific literacy through all the great programs and classes the park has to offer.  When she’s not at the park working she’s usually here with her family hiking or biking (her son is pictured here at one of the entrys to the Black Willow Trail).  Suzy is originally from Portland, Oregon but has spent time teaching and coaching volleyball in New York and Michigan.
